About Reflexology

Reflexology in some form has been around for thousands of years. This ancient wisdom has evolved and developed into the therapy as we know it today, with the body, systems and organs mapped onto the feet.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy, meaning it can be used alongside conventional treatments for optimal results. In Reflexology, the feet, hands and face become mini anatomical maps of the whole body - with every organ, bone and muscle corresponding with a specific reflex point.

By working these reflexes and pressure points, it’s believed that blocked energy can be shifted and certain issues can be addressed by triggering the body’s own healing response. Reflexology is a holistic therapy, working on the physical, spiritual and emotional, evoking deep relaxation and re-balancing and grounding the body as a whole.

Reflexology treatments trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, where the receiver will enter a state of rest, digest and repair (as opposed to the ‘fight or flight’ sympathetic nervous system which most of us are living in the grips of most days and is the cause for so many ailments!). Being in the parasympathetic nervous system lowers blood pressure, slows breathing, improves digestion and aids reproduction along with all other bodily functions, even down to each individual cell! It’s important for our health and wellbeing that we enter this state at least once per day, otherwise we could be seriously harming our health.

The term 'rewilding' is used for the restoration of land to its natural, uncultivated state.

This is what reflexology aims to do with the body. It does not claim to heal or cure, but to guide the body back to a state of balance, keeping each cell, organ and system working as optimally as it is able.

Alongside deep relaxation, the therapists touch will activate the release of oxytocin, endorphins, serotonin and dopamine which are our happy hormones and natural mood enhancers. It will also reduce stress levels by lowering cortisol levels.

As the treatment will release toxins which have built up within the body, you may experience a healing surge afterwards which may involve feeling worse before you feel better. Be sure to drink plenty of water following treatment to help flush these toxins from your body.
